A Review of Veering from the Wave

Formerly one-half of the now-legendary folk/pop duo, The Story, Kimball has taken her time making her solo debut. Well, it was worth the wait. To fans of that group, this album will serve as the perfect reintroduction to a very talented artist. Listeners will instantly recognize Kimball's voice by virtue of her work with her former group. Kimball supplied the band's signature harmonies and a hefty dose of comic relief in their live shows. Now, with Veering... she has come up with a sound that is hers alone. On this new disc Kimball categorically proves she is ready to be acknowledged not only as a singer, but also as a songwriter and front-woman. She creates a hybrid of pop and contemporary folk music by adding her distinctive soulful harmonies to the mix. Adhering to her roots, Veering... is produced by former producer and drummer of The Story, Ben Wittman. Her core band reads like an all-star lineup, with backup vocalist Lucy Kaplansky, guitarist Marc Shulman, and bassist Zev Katz. Some old friends lend their support as well, including guitarist Duke Levine, bassist Mike Rivard, and guitar/bouzouki gunslinger Larry Campbell. The disc features 11 Kimball compositions plus a perfectly chosen cover of Crowded House's overlooked pop classic, "Fall At Your Feet." The hypnotic single, "It's A Long Way Home," as well as "Kissing In The Car" are both radio-friendly tunes. Other highlights are the introspective "An Ordinary Soldier," the world-beat flavored "Take One Step," and the genre-defying "Revelations." Veering... is a revelation in itself. It's great to have Kimball back making such fine music.
