What Matters, the debut album of Jenn and Ry Cavanaugh's band MAYBE BABY featuring Billy Beard, Duke Levine and Tom West. Independent release 2003. Listen to the music at www.maybebaby.net.
Maybe Baby flip the finger to folk music traditions while at the same time honoring its virtues -- first-rate songwriting, great melodies and harmony singing. Led by singer-songwriters Jennifer Kimball (the Story), Ry Cavanaugh (Vinyl Avenue String Band) and drummer Billy Beard (Patty Griffin, Kim Richey, Family Jewels), the Cambridge-based group's debut What Matters pushes folk's acoustic envelope with a low-end sound built around Beard's subtly propulsive cocktail-kit drumming and Cavanaugh's baritone guitar. As if that and the contrast of Kimball's pop yin to Cavanaugh's mountain-influenced yang weren't enough, electric guitars, organ, mandocello, banjo, sax and harmonica provide a variety of colors rarely heard outside the realm of textural rock, applied with subtle mastery by distinguished members of the HI-N-DRY community including Jimmy Ryan, Jim Fitting (the Coots, Treat Her Right), Dana Colley and Billy Conway (Twinemen, Morphine) and David Champagne (the Heygoods, Treat Her Right).

RY CAVANAUGH on "WHAT MATTERS":

"We recorded What Matters at Hi-n-Dry Studio on the fifth floor of an old brick building in Cambridge Mass. during the spring and summer of 2002. Billy Conway took on the role as producer, while Dana Colley engineered whenever he could.

Its impossible to describe what it was like working on this record. Their was a lot of grief in all of our personal lives due to family illness and recent deaths. What we can say for sure is that none of us had a preconceived notion of what we would come out with. It sounds cheesy, but we just let the music happen.

In one big room we tracked live with Ry on baritone guitar, Jenn on acoustic guitar and ukulele, Billy Beard on drums, cocktail drum and percussion and Tom West did a couple of the live sessions with us on organ.

Once we had the basics, we called some friends in to bring their own sounds and ideas in. Kris Delmhorst had a break from touring and leant her voice to a few tracks. David Champagne came in one night after a dinner and fearlessly added some fierce sounding guitar tracks. Jim Fitting brought his chromatic harmonica in and pronounced "David stole my note" as he made up a few more on Cruel Sea. Dana Colley worked several long nights on strange and beautiful horn parts. Jimmy Ryan played electric mandolin and mandocello as he was finishing up work on his own record with Conway. Finally, we squeezed Duke in and he proceeded to open our minds right up. Each overdub redefined the songs for us.

Hi-n-Dry is becoming like the old label studios Sun, Stax, Motown, Chess, etc. It has a definitive sound because of the people involved in the process. Paul Q. Kolderie has known Billy Conway since college and engineered, produced and mixed many records with him. Paul put everything in its place for us over three days of mixing, and delivered finished songs for us to sequence and master.

Toby Mountain at Northeast Digital did the unglamorous, but essential and defining process of mastering the CD.

The entire design of the artwork for the CD belongs to Jenn. She printed from cut potatoes and photoshoped until she turned blue.

Well... here it is."

The Story: The Angel In the House

cover of The Story: The Angel In the House

released 1993   Elektra Records

The Story's second album

This duo's debut GRACE IN GRAVITY no doubt escaped many folk-pop lovers, but THE ANGEL IN THE HOUSE made its presence felt subtly at adult album alternative stations across America. Syncopated percussion and bossa nova rhythms mark the sound of the Story's second album, while a more formed feminist, and at times metaphysical, sensibility permeates the lyrics. Virginia Woolf inspired the album's title, and liner notes explain the other literary thoughts (from Germaine Greer, Horton Foote, et al) that underscore individual songs. ANGEL concerns itself with the psyche of womankind-how woman is affected by the struggle to find herself, to find love, and to hold on to both. At times, it's a dark process. "The Barefoot Ballroom" begins with Brooke stating, "sometimes I'm happy. mostly I'm not. I like to be alone a lot." The beautifully arranged "At the Still Point" features shifting time signatures and percussive nuances such as hand drums; "Missing Person Afternoon" uses congas. The a cappella opening of "In the Gloaming" is breathtaking; a piano comes in on the second verse, and the two women sing lyrics inspired by playwright Harold Pinter.
The Story: Jonatha Brooke (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano) and Jennifer Kimball (vocals)
All the musicians who made this record happen: Alex Alvear (vocals, bass); Duke Levine (acoustic & electric guitars, whale calls); Claudio Ragazzi (cuatro); Matt Glaser, Mimi Rabson (violin); Mindy Jostyn (fiddle); Erik Friedlander (cello); Anders Bostrom (flute, recorder, pennywhistle); Don Mokrynski (clarinet); Adam Kolker (soprano, tenor & baritone saxophones); Donny McCaslin (tenor saxophone); Rick Hammet (trumpet, flugelhorn); Gary Valente (trombone); Alain Mallet (piano, keyboards); Ben Wittman (keyboards, drums, percussion); Lionel Girardeau, Mike Rivard (bass); Cabelo (berimbau); Carlos Cordova (percussion, background vocals); Mike Ringquist, Gustavo Ernesto Diaz Moreno, Robert Thomas Jr. (percussion); Sharine Janse (background vocals). Recorded at Bear Tracks Studio, Suffern, New York and Newbury Sound, Boston, Massachusetts.

Veering From The Wave

Jennifer Kimball's CD, "Veering From the Wave" (Imaginary Road/Polygram), isn't so much a solo debut as it is a reintroduction to a familiar artist. Listeners will instantly recognize Kimball's voice by virtue of her work with The Story, the commercially-successful and critically-acclaimed group that in the early-'90s blazed the trail for contemporary, chart-topping folk-pop artists like Sarah McLachlan, Paula Cole and Jewel. As one-half of that now-legendary duo which made two albums for Elektra Records ("Angel In the House," "Grace In Gravity") and helped foster a whole new genre of intelligent, acoustic-based folk-pop -- to which radio responded at the time by creating Triple-A (Adult Album Alternative), an entirely new format -- Kimball supplied the group's signature harmonies and a hefty dose of comic relief in its live shows.

The Story: Grace in Gravity

cover of The Story: Grace in Gravity

released 1991   Green Linnet Records re-released on Elektra 1991

The Story's first album

"Grace in Gravity," the title song, is a meditation on a true story of a black ballet dancer who, after a car accident in South Africa, was paralyzed after the ambulance drivers chose to take the dancer's less gravely injured white companion to a better hospital. It's an astonishing story, beautifully crafted here with The Story's usual minimalist grace. That's the case with almost every song on the album.

Wayfaring Strangers: Shifting Sands of Time

Wayfaring Strangers is a band that explores the mystical side of American folk music.

It features some of the most renowned instrumental virtuosos in America and a whole group of cool singers. Lead by the indomitable Matt Glaser on fiddle, this band will take an audience on an extraordinary journey to the depths of America's soul. Featuring Andy Statman on clarinet and mandolin, Tony Trischka on banjo, Bruce Barth on piano, John McGann on guitar, and Jim Whitney on bass.

JK was a featured vocalist on Shifting Sands of Time, the group's debut cd. She is currently a guest vocalist, performing occasionally with the band. Some of the many special guest vocalists are Cathie Ryan, Tracy Bonham, Ralph Stanley and Ry Cavanaugh.

Every once in a while, an album comes along that challenges our expectations, our assumptions about the way music is made. The Wayfaring Strangers can take your breath away moment by moment, passage by passage, as strands of jazz, bluegrass, old-time country, folk, klezmer and more intertwine and give way to one another in a powerfully unique fusion. Not for those who demand that their music be comfortably predictable, Shifting Sands of Time is hauntingly new, like a dream mingling the past and the present, the known and the unknown into something that can touch our deepest emotions. -adapted from the notes by Jon Weisberger

Respond: A Compilation by Boston Women to Benefit Respond, Inc.

cover of Respond: A Compilation by Boston Women to Benefit Respond, Inc.

released 1998

Respond is a compilation to benefit Respond Incorporated, a non-profit organization that has provided confidential, free services for battered women and their children in the Boston area since 1974. Respond Inc. was one of the first programs in the country to offer shelter and assistance to victims of domestic violence.

The Respond compilation was a grassroots effort initiated by Boston-area songwriters. Many local musicians donated their time, performances, and energy to the project. In addition, studio time, mixing, mastering, legal services, graphic design, artwork, photography, publicity, web design, radio sponsorship, and record label support were donated in order to raise as much money for the organization as possible.

This projected is in the memory of Alexis Gewertz Shepard 1969-1998

Alexis Gewertz Shepard was a gifted, emerging singer-songwriter, and a beautiful, spirited, much-loved woman who died at least 50 years too young. She was 28 when her bicycle and a truck collided in Cambridge early last spring.

Jennifer's song "Veering from the Wave" is included here, as it was recorded for the album by the same name.
Jennifer was an executive producer for the second Respond Compilation album which came out in 2001, featuring, among others: Dolly Parton, Joan Baez, Sleater-Kinney, Aimee Mann, Jonatha Brooke, Indigo Girls
